After earning a bachelor degree in cellular and molecular biology from Tulane University, Dr. Schwartz went on to attend Georgetown University School of Medicine. While pursuing his medical degree, he furthered his expertise in breast cancer care by studying tumor biology and the molecular basis of cancer at the Lombardi Cancer Center, designated by the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Schwartz completed a 6-year plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Georgetown University Hospital, and a fellowship in advanced breast and body aesthetics at the internationally renowned Cleveland Clinic, where he held an appointment as a clinical instructor. During his tenure at Georgetown, Dr. Schwartz received many honors for his excellence in patient care, teaching and professionalism. He won the ‘Caring-Star Award’ yearly, given by patients to the top-rated healthcare providers at Georgetown University Hospital, he was given the highest teaching award as ‘Outstanding Resident Teacher’ for the Department of Plastic Surgery at Georgetown University Hospital, and he was also awarded a ‘Certificate of Professionalism’ from the Washington Hospital Center medical staff.

As a foundation for developing the Beverly Hills Breast Institute, Dr. Schwartz served as the Chief of Plastic Surgery at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital (PIH) in Whittier, CA, where he performed over 300 surgeries a year with a heavy focus on breast and body aesthetics and reconstruction. Taking an active leadership role in patient care and safety, Dr. Schwartz served on numerous committees at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, including: Patient Safety, Patient Experience, Surgical Administration, and Research Oversight.

Through his work with the cancer committee and breast cancer support groups, Dr. Schwartz helped develop a multidisciplinary team approach to caring for women with breast cancer. This specialized team provided women with information about breast cancer and their treatment options so they could better participate in their own care and decisions. Dr. Schwartz also served as the Co-Principle Investigator for PIH’s first national breast cancer registry that focused on nipple-sparing mastectomies. In recognition of his “patient-first” ethics and hard work, he was awarded the highest-level Physician Excellence Award.

Dr. Schwartz dedicates himself to creating policies aimed at enhancing safety and awareness for both patients and physicians. He is committed to promoting advances in medicine, and serves on various American Society of Plastic Surgeons committees, including Health Policy, Patient Safety, Emerging Trends, Quality and Performance Measurement and the Clinical Trials Network.

Because of his nationally esteemed expertise in breast surgery, Dr. Schwartz was selected by the ASPS as 1 of only 10 plastic surgeons in the United States to develop clinical practice guidelines for breast reconstruction using implants and tissue expanders. Dr. Schwartz was subsequently asked to develop the U.S. national guidelines for breast reconstruction utilizing autologous tissue (natural tissue from your own body). He has also received nationally recognition with many ‘Physician’s Choice’ and ‘Compassionate Doctor’ awards.

Dr. Schwartz has published significant literature in respected journals and textbooks and is an Aesthetic Editor for the Plastic Surgery Education Network. He has also served as a principle investigator for an FDA clinical trial aimed at correcting poorly healed breast scars. His current research interests include developing a new technique in breast reconstruction aimed at reducing pain and recovery time for women.

Seeing first-hand that the best way to beat breast cancer is early detection, Dr. Schwartz has created a yearly fundraising event that offers hundreds of free screening mammograms for underserved women.

Dr. Schwartz’s life-long commitment to and passion for patient safety and advancement in the field of aesthetic and restorative breast surgery has led to the founding of the Beverly Hills Breast Institute.
